What is eCommerce?

eCommerce (i.e. electronic commerce), is the selling of a product/service over the Internet.

Studies have shown that eCommerce Web sites increase sales 50% or more because many people with credit cards prefer to pay online.

eCommerce 101

There are two parts to eCommerce and many ways to implement each part:

Shopping Cart

The shopping cart is software that keeps track of what products/services a shopper has selected for purchase from your Web site.  A shopping cart displays identifying information, such as a part number, description, price, etc.  along with the quantity desired. 

Each time a product/service is added to the shopping cart, the shopper can choose to "continue shopping" or "check out". 

The "check out" procedure asks for billing and shipping information, as well as credit card information to finalize the transaction. 

An email invoice is sent with a confirmation number to finalize the transaction.

Money is not transferred between bank accounts if only a shopping cart solution is deployed.  Merchant services is required for this to occur.

Merchant Services

Merchant services takes place behind the scenes.  This is where the credit card information is approved or disapproved and funds are actually transferred between bank accounts.

Security

It is important that the Web page that accepts the credit card number is secure. 

Check for this by looking at the address bar in the browser.  You will see that the http:// has changed to https://.  

This shows that the data is encrypted before it is transmitted across the Internet.

Never enter your credit card information from a Web page that is not secured.
