Competition on the Internet is Just a Click Away

Camp Aunt Mary
For the past four years, I have held "Camp Aunt Mary" for
Torie and Grant, my niece and nephew, ages 15 and 12, respectively. This
year, Emily & Hannah
(9 and 7) also joined us.
We
always do fun things like going to The Beach Water Park, taking
the boat out on the lake, or going to Blue Jacket -- the outdoor drama.
Because Torie is a sophomore this year, I wanted to get her
excited about starting to think about college
When I was a teenager, I never had anyone take me under their wing and
explain anything related to college. I was clueless.
I
didn't have any idea what a credit hour was, how to get scholarships
(I was co-salutatorian of my graduating class), or what the SAT/ACT
were -- much less that I needed to study for them to compete.
This year, because Torie is a sophomore,
I wanted to give her the head start that I never had. I was
going to take her on a tour of a local university.
The Search Begins Online
I got my Masters Degree from the University of Dayton, so that was my
first choice. I went to their web site, but couldn't find anything
about attending a tour on campus. They had a virtual tour, but
that is not what I wanted. I wanted the kids to see an actual dorm
room.
Because competition is only a click away on the
Internet, I went to
Wright State University's Web site (my husband graduated from there
when it only had 3 buildings) and found the information I wanted
instantly -- complete with tour times and a phone number.
I called
and within two hours that same day, we were touring the campus.
A Funny Story
At the risk of embarrassing my niece, I have to tell
you this story. There were four or five other high school students
attending the tour with their parents, but wouldn't you know
that they called on my niece first to give her name and why she
was there.
Well, you guessed it. She said, "I
don't want to be here." and clammed up tight. I just shook
my head. Teenagers!
This story has a happy ending. She took the tour
and that afternoon, we went to a local bookstore and browsed through
SAT study guides. She was eating them up! Mission accomplished.
How This Relates to Your Business
Anyway, to tie this back to your business, you have to:
- Make it easy for visitors to find information
- Include the information that they want in the first place
If you don't, competition
is just a click away.
