What's the Big Deal About Blogs?

Here is a great 3 minute video that explains what a blog is and why they are important -- in plain English.

Is a Blog Right For Your Business?

Here are some reasons to consider a blog for your business:

  • You want to get new customers by driving more traffic to your website
  • You want to gain more visibility and higher ranking in the organic search engines
  • You want an easy way to communicate with current and potential customers

Blogs are hot and growing even hotter for businesses.  Chances are, many of the websites you visit already have a blog.

because they give you so much bang-for-your-buck.

Blogs are not for everyone. A blog requires an investment of time.  As a customer relationship-building tool, it must build momentum before it yields results.  Patience and persistence are important for success.  And either you or someone else will need to consistently write and post new content on your blog. That’s the down side.  On the up side, blogs have the potential to generate incredible business opportunities.

How Does a Blog Compare to a Website?

A blog is a website on steroids.  You can add a blog to your existing website or use a blog as your main website.  Most businesses add a blog to their website.

Blogs are much more powerful than a static website because they have a database and a powerful, easy-to-use content-management system that puts the power of publishing into your hands -- or others on your staff, with no requirement for technical expertise.

A blog increases your ability to communicate quickly, easily and effectively with your existing customers.  In doing so, your posts will get picked up by the search engines and attract new visitors to your website when they search for topics that match your blog post's content.  Your post comes up, they click on it, and they read it. You've just increased traffic to your website from people who potentially never knew your business existed before and who might be interested in learning more about your products and services.

WordPress Blogs — A Popular Choice

WordPress is a popular blog publishing tool that I use exclusively as a foundation for your business blog.   It is very powerful and flexible.  The software is actively maintained and has a huge network of users.  It will be around for a long time to come.

As an experienced blog consultant, I can custom design a WordPress blog for your business to match your branding and include a selection of functions called plug-ins to make your blog more valuable to you and your customers.

RSS Feeds

Watch this 3 minute video that explains RSS and shows how to use them.

Your blog contains the Feeder and your visitor acquires the Reader. It works something like your “Favorites” button in collecting websites you visit regularly into your Internet browser.  Whenever you enter a new post on your blog, your Feeder automatically sends it to their Reader.  Your message completely bypasses e-mail and its guardians for 100% delivery.

You Get What You Pay For:  Why You Shou

If you’d like to explore blogging before jumping in all the way, there are sites (like Blogger.com) that let you create a blog on their domain for free.

It’s great for trying it out, but I don’t recommend it for long-term business blogging.  It’s simply the difference between renting and buying.

Buying a home requires an upfront investment, but the long-term benefits pay off in equity.  The same is true in blogs.  When you create a blog somewhere like Blogger.com, most of the benefits go to that domain.  And when you do decide to buy your own blog, you can’t take anything from your rental site with you.

Choose Wisely

As you’ve probably learned by now, there are many website designers and developers to choose from.  And like everything else, you get what you pay for.

The same is true with blogs.  To achieve maximize results, you need to work with someone:

  • who knows what they’re doing
  • who understands how all the blog technology works and can make it work for your business

Do it right the first time and you’ll avoid the frustration and expense of having to go back and do it again.

Think a business blog is right for you?  Let’s talk about what you want to accomplish and consider the best approach to get you there.  I’ll tell you how it’s making a difference in my business.  I’m confident it will also make a difference in yours.
